Indigenous Materials Project – Year 2

Give the gift of learning and literacy. Support the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) Calls to Action #62, #63 and #93 by putting children’s books by and about Canada’s indigenous peoples – First Nations, Métis and Inuit, into the hands of Ottawa’s youngsters ages 0 -12. These materials are urgently needed to support youngsters of all backgrounds in understanding the variety of experiences that tell the whole Canadian story.

  • Call to Action #62 is supported by providing books to aid in family conversations about “residential schools, Treaties and Aboriginal peoples’ historical and contemporary contributions to Canada” which the TRC indicates should be a “mandatory education requirement”.
  • Call to Action #63 calls for “intercultural understanding, empathy and mutual respect”. Our project resources help start that education process in the home.
  • Call to Action #93 recommends revising the information given to newcomers to Canada and the citizenship test “to reflect a more inclusive history of the diverse Aboriginal peoples of Canada”. Our project makes resources by and about indigenous peoples in Canada more accessible to newcomers, both children and their parents/care-givers.

As of November 2017, we have purchased more than 100 books for the Indigenous Materials Project collection and distributed them to our delighted young clients.

Overall, in the first half of 2017, we have distributed 3,347 free books in total… But there is so much more to do! By making a financial donation to Twice Upon a Time, you are ensuring families read and treasure excellent books together. Funds received for this year’s Development Appeal Campaign will be used for program costs, operating costs, and Year 2 of our Indigenous Materials Project.

How your donation makes a difference:

  • $25 allows us to buy three brand new, un-chewed, board books for our very youngest readers
  • $50 allows us to buy four books for our Indigenous Materials Project
  • $100 helps us to produce professional promotional material for our outreach efforts
  • $175 pays our storage costs for one month

Help us continue to provide this experience for Ottawa families in need, by contributing to our Indigenous Materials Project – Year 2.
